When brakes are applied, the air flow coming from the brake valve gets in the cavity located below the diaphragm and the air pressure underneath the diaphragm surpass the spring force when it reaches approximately 5 PSI. It then pushes the piston until the contact points close, completing the stop light electrical circuit.
